The state of West Bengal, in eastern part of India, has one of the most fertile agricultural lands in the world. The state has substantial production of a varied range of crops, vegetables and fruits.

 

It has the Tea and Fruit gardens in its northern districts embrassing the Himalayas. The orange gardens are famous for their Darjeeling variety, although not so world famous as Darjeeling Tea.

Just around the northern tip of Ganges delta in the state of West Bengal, one of the best mangoes in the world are grown. Among the scores of varieties of these mangoes, the Himsagar and Langra varieties of mango are most popular among the local people. Being of thin skins, it needs proper processing before catering its export demand. This food processing sector for processing mango in the Indian state of West Bengal, mainly for export, along with catering domestic demand, has huge potential for domestic and foreign investors in Food Technology and processing sectors. Onion production is growing fast in this region too. The onion storagge units are still incorporating mostly old technics which are not so effective, hence, requires proper industry to cater the specific requirement.

 

The flood plains of Ganges delta is ideal for producing Rice, Jute and especially potatoes. The state of West Bengal is one of the leaders in Rice and Potato production. However, most of these produce are exported in semi-raw form of sheetlac to China, USA, EU, Japan and other countries, where the final products are manufactured. The industry leaders are invited to have their manufacturing units close to these areas of Bengal which have been a leader in this production for decades.

 

As we move towards the southern part of Bengal, the honey industry of Sunderbans are still done in small scale where as it has the potential to be a big player in domestic and international market for its rich flavoured honey collected directly from the mangrove forests famous for its tigers. Recently crab collected from these areas are getting exported directly to many countries, especially to China. A processing industry in this sector can earn good values to this export.he harvests from sea and estuary areas.

 

The last but not the least in the Southern part of the state of West Bengal. It has plateau regions, forests, fertile flood plains for cultivation and added to it are the rich harvests of sea foods from the Bay of Bengal. This area of East and West Midnapur districts along with other districts, have enormous potential for processing cahew nuts, Fish, sea foods, prawns and other products. West Bengal is famous for different types of fishes of fresh, brakish and sea-water fishes.

 

Production of flowers are also substantial here to cater the need of religious rituals of the predominantely Hindu people of the state. The export potential of this sector is severely under utilised. There are also some unconventional products which are yet to be explored by the worldOne such explored area is the local beverages / liqour made from sap / juices of palm tree and date tree. The variety of beverages produced from Mahua flower is a traditional drink for the local tribal people. If properly promoted these can open new venues with huge profits for the foreign investors.
